There's three general quality stages to repainting.
1st is the plain vanilla, masking tape and sanding. Will run anywhere
from $2000 to $4000 based on color, trim tape work, door jam, trunk
access, etc.
2nd is a partial restoration job. Remove all ext trim and windows,
partial sand to metal, some areas not sanded down. Edges of body
panels will get paint but screws and bolts not removed, panels
remain on car. From $5000 to $15000 depending on many things,
including undercoat, access, glass and trim availability, rework of
panels with lead or bondo, metal fill, number of coats, clears,
pearls, metalics, etc.
Last is a concours job. Car is completely disassembled. All painted
panels are taken down to bare metal via a dip tank. Metal repair for
any damage. Etch, prime, sand, prime, sand, clean, sand, base coat,
base coat, tint coat, tint coat with sanding in between, clear with
pearls or metals added, more clear, more clear, sanding in between,
color sand and buff panels. Now, reassemble car, install glass and
trim, new panel bolts with fresh paint, touch ups, and wax. About
$13000 to $30000. Car type doesn't matter at this point, Chevy,
Countach, all the same labor and materials. Countach would be higher
because you're gonna break the windshild on removal. Trim costs more.
I've done the first and second to a car, never done a concours. If
it's a rare car, and you want the showmanship, go for the concours,
just keep the checkbook handy. You'll find all kinds of unexpected
things when the paint comes off {:-).
